A Caring Community of God's People

About

VISION STATEMENT

The people of First Presbyterian Church Thomasville, in response to the love of God given to us in Jesus Christ, are called by the Holy Spirit to live in relationship with God and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ through the use of our individual and collective gifts in teaching, worship, service and fellowship.

1. WHO WE ARE:

First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville is a congregation of Christians with diverse backgrounds.  Being one in Christ, we express our unity as we respond to the needs of our congregation, the community and the world beyond.

2.  OUR CONVICTIONS AND AUTHORITY:

Our convictions and authority are founded in the Bible as the written Word of God; to that end we honor the scripture and teachings of Jesus Christ. We build on our established foundation of faith as expressed in our Reformed confessions and order. We are willing to be led by the Holy Spirit, and firmly believe in the necessity and power of prayer.   Being founded in the Word of God, we have a responsibility to teach the Word of God: we therefore emphasize Christian education and promote learning opportunities for all age groups in our congregation.

3. OUR ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP:

We accept the direction of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., and are guided by our Book of Order.   Our leaders, comprised of nine (9) Ruling Elders overseeing seven (7) committees, are selected by the congregation; and we will support the decisions of our elected leaders.  We will encourage open communication between congregation and Session.  We will further the historical objectives of peace, unity, and purity of the Church, and to that end we will address conflicts and settle them promptly with respect for differing opinions.

Committees: Buildings and Grounds, Christian Education, Congregational Care, Finance and Stewardship, Outreach, Personnel, Worship.

4. OUR MISSION:

Our church is called by God to spread the good news of salvation to all people.  We encourage the spiritual growth of our members through education, personal and corporate spiritual renewal, and pastoral leadership and guidance.  We seek God’s will and guidance in our activities, and strive to serve God mainly with our God-given treasures.  In addition we use our talent & time to complete our many goals as we continue Christ work.  In order to provide a nurturing Christian community, we will love and care for everyone in our congregation.  We recognize and respond to the spiritual and physical needs and concerns of our community: we will invite, include and assimilate new members into our congregation, and will reach out to help and minister to the needs of members of our community by providing resources and opportunities to develop necessary skills.  We will be active in the mission of our church and support missions throughout the world.  We minister and encourage awareness of the good news through personal faith and Christian education.  Open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will broaden our vision.

5. OUR CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING AND DOING:

Our church doors are open to all who desire to know Christ. We acknowledge diversity and encourage openness and honesty in a comfortable atmosphere of respect for differing opinions.  We strive to participate in ecumenical programs crossing religious, racial and cultural lines, while upholding our Presbyterian traditions.  We believe the entire world is our charge.
